A stylized illustration from the classic Kabuki/Bunraku play Love Suicides at Shonezaki by Chikamatsu. Tokebei a soy sauce merchant, falsely accused of forging a signature by his old friend, hides from his accuser who has come to visit Ohatsu, Tokebei's love, a courtesan. Ohatsu hides Tokebei under the veranda, covered with the skirt of her kimono, and when he is upset by his old friend's slanderous accusations she comforts him with her foot. For some reason this narative facinates me.
